Smoking e-cigarettes in the workplace has been banned in Boston, Massachusetts.
The ban also includes vaping in outdoor areas such as restaurant patios.
The Boston Public Health Commission says it’s made the decision to close a loophole and treat e-cigarettes like traditional cigs.
In recent years, e-cigarettes like the ones sold by Smart Smoker have grown in popularity and have been seen by some customers as a way to reduce their tobacco cravings.
The e-cigarettes allow users to inhale nicotine vapor without fire, smoke, ash, or carbon monoxide.
Smoking traditional cigarettes in public places such as work has been banned in England since July 1st 2007. However, there is no such ban regarding electronic cigarettes.
The new legislation was intended to cut deaths from second-hand smoke. At the time of the ban’s introduction, doctors estimated passive smoking kills more than 600 people a year.
However, many people have followed celebrities including Johnny Depp and switched their traditional fag for an electric one.
It is widely known that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world. When we intake nicotine, it causes dopamine to be released into the brain. This is a naturally occuring “pleasure” chemical in our bodies that makes us feel good, calm, focussed. One of the reasons why nicotine is so addictive is that over time, the more you use it, the more your body needs to reach the same level of pleasure. Most nicotine addicts are so through smoking cigarettes; the most common way to obtain nicotine.
Will power alone is often not enough for some people who try to stop smoking; the craving for a cigarette is so strong because over time, nicotine changes the structure and function of the brain. Addicts will think they need a cigarette when actually it is purely the nicotine that is being craved.
That doesn’t mean to say, however that the cigarette is not physically addictive. The action of inhaling the toxic smoke and putting the cigarette to your mouth in itself can become habitual, making the nicotine addiction even harder to beat. The mouth and hands are very erogenous and touching and inhaling something that makes you feel so relaxed and happy is also in itself very hard to stop doing.
That’s why more and more people are realising that their addiction to nicotine is so much more complex than they had initially realised. There are numerous contributing factors to the addiction that must all be eased before it can be completely beaten and the addiction to the drug is a large part of it but old habits die hard. The actions of holding the cigarette between your fingers and having it in your mouth have to both be kicked in order for the temptation to smoke to no longer be an issue.
The electronic cigarette has been on the market for a few years now and has endured a turbulent introduction into society, despite manufacturers and distributors claiming them to be a less harmful alternative to smoking tobacco cigarettes.
Governments and health organisations appear to have fought tooth and nail to prevent the wide scale distribution of the e cig, first claiming the product was simply unsafe and later attacking the fact that they contain nicotine, which has of course proven to be highly addictive.
In the early days, many e cigarette distributors and companies, operating mainly on the internet, were marketing them as device to aid smokers to quit smoking and presenting them as a healthier alternative to smoking. Whilst the latter claims still seem to be relevant, (there don’t seem to be many people willing to suggest that the electronic cigarette is not at least a little less harmful than tobacco cigarette smoking) the language has changed to suggest the product is “less harmful”, rather than “healthier”.
Pernickety as this may seem, it’s a price that the e cig distributors have had to pay in order to stay in business, as it became simply unacceptable to market the product as a smoking cessation device or to use the word “healthier” regarding something that still contained addictive nicotine.
In many ways, like the warnings that are displayed on the packaging of regular tobacco cigarettes, so to the electronic cigarette branding is following suit, which is probably no bad thing. Likewise, websites promoting and selling the product should now display the relevant warnings clearly on the site.
Perhaps, ultimately, it’s the smokers themselves that have the loudest voices in this battle and the strongest hope of providing a victory for the electronic cigarette. Those smokers who have been bold enough in their search for something that may satisfy their cravings, yet possibly put themselves at less risk, have often in recent years found themselves knocking on the door of the e cig.
Many smokers who have chosen the e cigarette as an alternative to tobacco smoking have reported that they feel generally “really good” after making the switch.
Despite the struggle and opposition that this potentially remarkable product has faced, the electronic cigarette seems to be here to stay. In fact, the market seems to be growing rather than faltering and with many more distribution websites springing up, it’s not difficult to check them out for yourselves and draw your own conclusions.
