Nicotine: Some Facts

It is widely known that nicotine is one of the most addictive substances in the world. When we intake nicotine, it causes dopamine to be released into the brain. This is a naturally occuring “pleasure” chemical in our bodies that makes us feel good, calm, focussed. One of the reasons why nicotine is so addictive is that over time, the more you use it, the more your body needs to reach the same level of pleasure. Most nicotine addicts are so through smoking cigarettes; the most common way to obtain nicotine.

Will power alone is often not enough for some people who try to stop smoking; the craving for a cigarette is so strong because over time, nicotine changes the structure and function of the brain. Addicts will think they need a cigarette when actually it is purely the nicotine that is being craved.

That doesn’t mean to say, however that the cigarette is not physically addictive. The action of inhaling the toxic smoke and putting the cigarette to your mouth in itself can become habitual, making the nicotine addiction even harder to beat. The mouth and hands are very erogenous and touching and inhaling something that makes you feel so relaxed and happy is also in itself very hard to stop doing.

That’s why more and more people are realising that their addiction to nicotine is so much more complex than they had initially realised. There are numerous contributing factors to the addiction that must all be eased before it can be completely beaten and the addiction to the drug is a large part of it but old habits die hard. The actions of holding the cigarette between your fingers and having it in your mouth have to both be kicked in order for the temptation to smoke to no longer be an issue.
